Hace 104 años, el sábado 22 de junio de 1918, nevó sobre el pueblo de Belén

Hoy queremos rememorar, la primera vez que nuestro pueblo, sufrió las consecuencias de la caída de nieve, en el pasado siglo. Por Alfredo Melidore (*).

El invierno de 1918, comenzó en Escobar con un espectáculo climático que asombró a los pobladores de la zona. Eso obedeció a que el sábado 22 de junio, se registró la primera nevada que soportó esta región de la provincia de Buenos Aires, en el transcurso del pasado siglo.

Esa recordada y célebre nevada, que ocurrió hace 104 años, fue por mucho tiempo el comentario obligado de los vecinos de la localidad.

Según los relatos que oportunamente nos hicieran Justo Juan Gaytán y Nicolás Chiaramonte (1) quienes recordaban perfectamente, el inusual fenómeno ocurrido, en ese gélido invierno escobarense: al comenzar la tarde de ese destemplado 22 de junio, el frío se hizo sentir sensiblemente, acompañado con un cielo gris plomizo, que aparentemente, anunciaba tormenta.

Pasado el mediodía, el cielo comenzó a ensombrecerse, hasta asemejar un adelantamiento de la brumosidad nocturna, lo que hizo que en las viviendas, se encendieran las lámparas de kerosén, con horas de antelación.

Transcurrido algún tiempo, la nieve comenzó a caer, en forma de extensas gotas de lluvia, que demoraban en precipitarse y que flotaban levemente en el aire.

Los niños, que no conocían lo que era una tormenta de nieve, arriesgaban a decir que lo que veían a través de las ventanas: “… parecían plumas blancas,… o bien papelitos blancos que caían del cielo….”

Pasadas varias horas, el vecino Antonio Dusi (tal vez recordando los inviernos de su Italia natal), creó el tradicional muñeco de nieve, a una cuadra de la plaza, en la hoy esquina de Mitre y Estrada.

Al anochecer, el frío se hizo más intenso y las calles y las veredas quedaron cubiertas por unos quince centímetros de nieve.

A consecuencia del fenómeno, los jóvenes integrantes del grupo teatral del Centro Criollo “La Oración”, que esa noche tenían el ensayo general para una función, que en principio, se iba a realizar al día siguiente (domingo 23 de junio), en el salón de la Sociedad “Italia” de Socorros Mutuos, debieron postergar – por el intenso frío reinante – el mencionado ensayo, como así la anunciada representación, que finalmente se llevó a cabo el domingo 30 de junio.

Al día siguiente, ya finalizada la inusual tormenta invernal, se podían ver las cornisas y molduras de los edificios del pueblo, aún ribeteados por cúmulos de nieve, que comenzaron a derretirse con los primeros rayos del sol mañanero.

Según el relato del memorioso vecino Aníbal Abal – quien por junio de 1918 – vivía junto a sus padres y hermanos, en la zona rural que se ubicaba entre Escobar y Matheu, cerca de la actual Loma de Sbravatti, la destemplada noche de la nevada de 1918 se cobró una víctima, que fue su pariente, Feliciano Tellechea, propietario de un establecimiento de campo, aledaño a la finca de la familia Abal.

Esa noche en plena caída de la nieve, Tellechea había concurrido para hacerles a los Abal, su habitual visita nocturna.

Horas después, cuando decidió volver a su casa, al cruzar el alambrado que separaba ambas propiedades, probablemente sufrió un desvanecimiento y quedó allí con sus ropas enganchadas en el alambre de púas, a merced del frío y de la nieve, lo que le costó la vida.

A primeras horas de la mañana siguiente, el doctor Enrique Erill fue el encargado de certificar el fallecimiento del infortunado vecino, como consecuencia de un problema cardíaco, agravado, sin duda, por el gran frío padecido a consecuencia de la nevada.

Es menester aclarar, que por esos años se dictaban clases de lunes a sábados.
